▣ TYPE: Demonstrator
⧇ CLIENT: HG Matthews
▤ KEY MATERIALS: Timber / Hempcrete / Lime / Clay / Straw
▦ METHODOLOGY: Model making / 1:1 mockups / 1:1 build / Prefabrication
⧆ COLLABORATORS: Arup / Henry Stringer / Steven Cooper / Central Saint Martins, UAL
Panel House is a technical development of the prefabricated hemp and timber system utilized at Flat House, streamlining it for Modern Methods of Construction Category 2, Panel House tests both pre-fabrication methods and zero carbon technologies. With an internal floor area of 60m² it was designed in different configurations to be capable of hosting both a seated meal for 30 people or occupied as a 1 bedroom house. The research explores prefabricated building models that are capable of challenging the preconceptions around mass production and exploring its potential.
Commissioned by HG Matthew, the demonstrator was designed collaboratively with UAL architecture students using a palette of predominantly cellulose and lime based materials – timber, wood fibre, hemp shiv and lime binders. Following prefabrication at Central Saint Martins and the erection of the frame on site, the second phase of infilling the structure has been used as a pedagogical tool to deliver skills workshops and continue learning with experimental methods, materials and mixes. In Panel House, the timber cassettes were modified to meet residential U-values, and an efficient mixing of module sizes facilitated intelligent service runs around the periphery of the building.
