These four films narrate a participatory process of the design and construction of Harvest House, a prototypical building developed as part of the Growing Place project. Growing Place explores the possibilities of alternative learning models, materials, economies and cultures in constructing the infrastructure required to access and nurture land.
Harvest House is a flexible, ultra-low-carbon structure made from natural materials. It can be used as a small agricultural building, workshop, communal space, or a home for up to six people. The project is a collaborative initiative by Material Cultures to develop critical infrastructure at Pasteur Gardens, London, N18. The primary objective is to create replicable systems, typologies and processes for the creation of farm-based buildings that can be applied in both rural and urban settings.
The co-design workshops were held on site and were integral to gathering insight and ideas that established the design brief, with a broader view towards how these concepts could be replicated and adapted on other similar sites. The result is Harvest House, a typological building that can be constructed from regionally available materials, with simple tools and minimal skill.
The construction workshops were attended by a broad mix of participants including those with backgrounds in growing and design. They happened over 5 weeks with each week having a particular material focus.
Growing Place is a model for regenerative processes of construction where materials are drawn from the bio-region and infrastructure is designed with community partners and constructed through a participatory learning programme.
