▣ TYPE: Documentary film / Postgraduate technical study
⧇ INSTITUTION: Central Saint Martins, UAL
▤ KEY MATERIALS: Clay / Gravel / Hemp / Stone / Timber
▦ METHODOLOGY: Site visits / Systems Analysis / Film / Photography
⧆ COLLABORATORS: H.G Matthews / East Bros Timber / Dreadnought Tiles / SheepWool Insulation / Mike Wye / Ty Mawr / Margent Farm
A series of documentary films, Productive Landscapes documents sites of material extraction, processing and production. These films interrogate the processes of sourcing and manufacture from which our material landscape is formed, and question their relationship to the social and cultural context of our built environment.
Each film centres around the processing of a material, from clay to hemp, stone and timber. Together these films tell a story of our relationship to our landscape, and the violence of the different processes of extraction applied to different resources, from the finite to the regenerative.
In parallel to the process of film-making, Sankey diagrams were developed to illustrate the relative material and energy flows involved in the different production processes, and identify both the productive and unproductive waste streams from these activities.
STUDENTS: Alexandros Xenophontos, Antoinette Oni, Antonia Maisch, Aya Mousa, Benedict Wigmore, Benjamin Holland, Callum Campbell, Ceri Hedderwick Turner, Connie Beau-Champ, Eloise Coleman, Flynn Williams, Harry Jones, Henry Stringer, Holly Drinkwater, Jack Sweet, Jacob Phil-Ebosie, Jake Maddocks, Katie Campbell, Leucotea Andriolo, Marwa El Mubark, Nina Anderson, Ragavendran Gowrisankar, Sam Beasley, Sam Hawkins, Sedayah Simpson, Sodueari Graham-Douglas, Will Bradley and Will Hayter
