▦ DATE: 13rd-14th October 2025
▦ TIME: 09:00-18:00
▥ LOCATION: Springfield Community Allotments, Bristol
▨ WITH: Rowena Bashforth
Join us for a workshop, led by Rowena Bashforth and jointly delivered by the WeCanMake team, Material Cultures and the RIOT Lab EPFL, exploring both the theory and hands-on practice of working with lime.
THE WORKSHOP: This workshop offers an introduction to the traditional and contemporary use of lime in building, with a focus on rendering directly onto straw bale walls. Participants will learn about the properties of lime, its role in breathable wall systems, and how it supports healthy, low-carbon retrofits. Through demonstrations and hands-on sessions, you'll gain experience preparing lime mixes, applying base and finish coats, and working with different tools and techniques. The first two days (13-14 October) will include site orientation, talks, and guided practical sessions. Participants are then welcome to stay for an additional three build days (15-17 October) to deepen their skills and contribute to a live project.
Rowena Bashforth is a retrofit specialist and natural builder with a focus on low-carbon construction and heritage craft. As a qualified Retrofit Coordinator, Futureproof approved builder and member of the BWCE Home Energy team, Rowena supports homeowners in making their homes more energy-efficient through practical, accessible retrofit solutions. With experience in lime plastering, thermal imaging and environmental workshops, Rowena brings a hands-on, people-focused approach to low-carbon building.
These workshops welcome people of all building abilities – beginners, as well as experienced practitioners. You do not need any pre-requisite knowledge to join us – just a willingness to learn and get hands-on with materials. Snacks and light refreshments will be provided for participants, but you will be required to bring your own lunch.
ACCESS: Springfield Allotment is a live construction site, with uneven ground that means it is not currently wheelchair accessible. There will be a range of jobs to get involved with during the workshop, and you can decide what's right for you. You will be on your feet and out in the elements for a lot of the day, but there will be plenty of time for breaks and rest when needed. We warmly encourage everyone to take the day at their own pace, whether that means joining in fully, or stepping back when needed. If you would like to speak to the WeCanMake team about what to expect, you can reach us at hello@wecanmake.org.
TRANSPORTATION: Material Cultures is rooted in a low-carbon approach so please travel to the workshop by public or shared transport if you can. We will be trying to do the same.
PRICE: These workshops are part of our commitment to sharing skills and knowledge in a way that supports equity, sustainability and justice. We want to make our courses accessible to as many people as possible while also sustaining our work, and we will be offering tickets on a sliding scale with three rates:
Why might I pay a solidarity fee?
Consider paying this if you can check one or more of the following:
Your contribution helps someone else access the course who otherwise couldn’t.
We ask that you self-select which rate you pay. We do not need proof of any of the above, but please note that we have a very limited number of places (10 people).
