▣ TYPE: Residential
▨ CLIENT: Human Nature
▤ KEY MATERIALS: Hempcrete cassette / Timber
▦ METHODOLOGY: System Design / Building Information Modelling / 1:1 Material testing
A development of over 700 homes in Lewes on the south coast, the Phoenix is designed around the community that will inhabit it. Forms such as stoops, courtyards and decks assume lead roles in what is an intentionally, but subtly, theatrical architecture. The urban and architectural design create a base, a stage, on to which community can be cultivated and interwoven.
Inherently low carbon, the buildings are constructed from prefabricated timber cassettes filled with an insulative hemp and lime mixture, that once dry will be lifted into place. Varied natural timber claddings enliven the facades and streetscapes. Deep thresholds in the form of stepped entrances and overhangs bring depth and delight to the elevation. The areas around these can be appropriated and inhabited in a variety of ways including zones for planting, sitting and gathering with neighbours.
